The behavior of the Republican Party, which is still basically Trump’s Fascist Party, is behaving in a manner as if another coup attempt is in the making. I expect that this might actually be true, and if so, it will be sooner rather than later. Time for another attempt is not on their side, waiting too long gives Biden’s team more time to prepare a defense against it. And Trump is desperate and fears jail. He already has, and will in the future, do ANYTHING to avoid it. Never underestimate the dangers posed by a wounded predator.
An Inside Job is the Main Danger
The reprehensible recent behavior of Congresswoman Greene points to it, along with the almost total support from House Republicans for her. As I am beginning to understand things, it’s only a matter of time before more plotters are outed, and there are certainly more who have yet to be uncovered. So there is also pressure mounting to act before that happens. I cannot of course predict the exact form a coup might take, but I would consider Greene, who may herself be acting as a distraction since she will be closely watched, and others in Congress associated with her to be a direct threat. They have easy access to inside the Capital itself. Any coconspirators would likely have the ability to smuggle what they need into the Congress, and she and some of her associates seem like loose enough cannons to be part of such a plot, even without a go ahead from Trump or his allies.
In any case, it seems very likely that Biden and his staff also have such concerns, and have already taken defensive measures. I would consider daily preventive checks in the Congressional buildings for implements of destruction. I don’t think groups like the Proud Boys are the main danger at this point for such actions. And their threats may just be another diversion.
Trump and Fascism are Still in Control of the Republican Party
I think it is becoming clear to most Republicans that they stand a good chance of further losses in 2022 and 24, and as a result they have given up any semblance of having a program or national policy other than undermining what’s left of democracy, voting rights and democratic rule. So I think it would be a sensible policy and approach by Democrats to assume the worst if they haven’t already. The fact that they still refuse to honor the legitimacy of the Biden’s election is of deep concern to me. Fascists are now taking complete control of tactics and policy, even with Trump deposed. They are the real threat.
I would like nothing better than to be wrong about my suspicions and concerns, and just chalk them up to post insurrection paranoia. There are of course other ways to read current Republican behavior. But it seems wise to assume the worst, and act accordingly. Doing unexpected and brazen acts to grab state power are the hallmark of fascists. They don’t play by the rules, as demonstrated by January 6th. Nor will they rule out the use of murder, assassination, or other forms of violence. This March 4th Trump/QAnon event, which I admittedly know little about, is something to pay close attention to. A main reason why the guard has not been removed from the area surrounding the capital.
